With the mission to promote economic and social well-being globally, Paris-based Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) organised short video competition for youth around the world for their 50^th anniversary last year. Sona College of Technology’s IT student Ms R Vidhya Priyadarshini bagged the Special Mention Prize for her video ‘Tomorrow in Our Hands’ that answered ‘What is Progress?’. She was invited to attend the OECD forum that was chaired by US Secretary of State Ms Hillary Clinton and the prize included an all-expense paid trip to Paris, France.

Similarly this year also OECD is eager to hear Youth’s Ideas and Ms R Vidhya Priyadarshini along with her five fellow winners from Peru, Colombia, Ukraine and Australia have been asked to organise the event as Youth Co-organiser for The Global Youth Video Competition 2012. She says, “The challenge and opportunity, as well as the OECD’s motivation to listen to youth on global issues, was what drew me to the previous OECD Video Competition. Youth is traditionally characterised by a fresh, fearless, positive and highly energetic approach that can help us to achieve our goals in life. That’s the reason why around the world we are saying ‘Youth Can!’ By nurturing and channelling this enthusiasm, young people can build a better future with better policies. The OECD provides a platform for showcasing your ideas to the world. Now pool your thoughts into a video and let your idea be the reason for the world to smile tomorrow!”

The theme of this year’s competition is:

What are the big issues in education today?

• Learning the right skills to get a job
• Bridging the ‘digital divide’
• Tackling inequality in access to education and training
• Inspiring creativity and innovation
• … Or something else?

Anyone aged between 18 and 25 years can participate by making a short video (3 minutes max.) and submit it within March 31^st 2012. The Winners get an all-expense paid trip to Paris, France to attend the OECD Forum on 22-24 May 2012.

Modern theaters have its won fame and pride where three chief ministers of our state Ms.Jayalalitha,M.Karunanithi and M.G.Ramachandran started their carrier which made them great artist down the lane.Also many other artists are the products of the modern theaters which is a well known fact.

The Dusk was unfortunate for modern theaters with its last film “vettri namadhae” in 1984. The whole modern theater studios,dressing rooms,parks was demolished and they constructed villas and apartments. The frontier entrance gate made in hardstone is kept as a monument witnessing its glory and gratitude.

The air of bliss is flowing across the city in the Wednesday evening (28/12/11) , in the event of  Audio release function of the movie ” Nee Enakaga mattum” in Nehru kaliarangam,Bose grounds facilitated by honorable mayor soundappan as a  chief guest and many other VIP’s in the city. They started this film two years ago in their very  own studio and company name “The New Modern film Makers” which comprises the team of ten young blood salemites with firing vision to revamp the identity of Salem in tamil movie industry.

The director of film K.B.Shakthivel appreciated and thanked all his teammates and wellwishers who helped in the tenure and made it as success also he added to provide a great support from Press and people to make the movie a grand success. Music director Jeevan mayil, assistant of music director deva  expressed his whole hearted gratitude for giving him the chance and for providing support for his work. This Audio release was something special and different from other audio releases where eminent citizens of Salem played a vital role both as a guests clubbing people from all sectors who are with common interest. As the part of this release they had a festive march from Vellakalpatti,a village near Salem for a cover of 10km. Two songs with visuals was played which impulsed a great expectation on the movie. The Audio release function was a grand success and it planted a seed of confidence that Salem will again get her jubilance again!!!..

Similar to our city, Salem exists in 24 other states in the US. Places named after Salem do exist in Sweden, Germany, and South Africa also. Another interesting point, is that Oregon State in the US has another namesake in India -Madras (renamed Chennai).

During 1960′s Mr. Hugh Morrow, a Rotarian and a city librarian in Salem, Oregon, USA, and Dr. Busnagi Rajannan, a well known Librarian of Salem, Tamilnadu, India corresponded with each and proposed the establishment of a Sister city programme between the two cities.

Dr. Rajannan visited Salem, Oregon in the US in 1962, and was received by the Rotarians, city officials, senators, and the Oregon State Governor. During his visit, Dr. Rajannan was presented with a Key to the American City-Salem.

At this meeting the two cities were formally declared as Sisters. In 1964, the Mayor of Salem Oregon, US (Mr. Willarad C. Marshall) visited our Salem in Tamilnadu with his family. He was received by the Rotarians, the general public, and officials including the Collector, the Municipal Chairman and City Councilors. On his return he initiated a sister cities coordination committee there. Our Salem Industrialist and Rotarian J.R.Mehta had also visited our sister-city Salem in Oregon and enjoyed their hospitality and conveyed our good will towards them.

As a programme, the sister-city project did not continue beyond the exchange of these visits. So Dr.B. Rajannan was the pioneer of this Sister-Cities tie up between Salem India and Salem, America.

Now, for nearly 50 years, Dharmapuri K.Balasundram, a former resident of Salem, is maintaining his interest in this tie up and kept alive the spirit all these years. He is very keen to carry forward this as his mission in his life to foster relationship among all Salemites in India and America all these years ever since 1963 through his writings in the local journals in both Salem cities-India and America,with his association with Sister-Cities International (www.sister-cities.org) and People-to-People (www.ptpi.org).

In the course of his efforts, he got contact with Mr. Tim King, founder of a web site-Salem- News.com and a popular TV journalist in our sister city-Salem, Oregon in the US.

Due to the mutual interest in between each other in connecting Salem Cities, he has been invited to make a visit to our Salem and enjoy our hospitality and to make a documentary on our city. This documentary will be projected to Salem in Oregon and in other US states including Alabama, Arkansas, Connecticut, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Mass, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, South Carolina, Utah, Virginia, West Virginia, Wisconsin, Michigan, Minnesota, Pennsylvania, North Carolina, Ontario,where places named SALEM exist.

To support the effort of K. Bala Sundaram, two people Mr.D.Thirunavukarusu , a businessman of Aurmugam Pandaaram & Sons an Importer & Exporter of Seeds and Spices , in Leigh Bazaar. and Mr.Praveen Kumar C, an Internet Marketing Professional and founder of Salemjilla.com joined hands with him to organise a host committee here in Salem to invite Tim King, as a representative of our Sister city -Salem in Oregon. The Minister, after distributing welfare assistance at Edapadi and declaring open two part-time fair price shops at Kattur and Ncahipalayam villages, said that the people’s requests for fair price shops were met immediately. The Chief Minister would distribute 60,000 cows and 2 lakh goats and sheep to the poor to enhance their livelihood. She had the capacity to fulfil her promises to the people within six months and all her welfare schemes were targeting the poor in rural areas.

The Minister accused DMK regime of making the government welfare schemes benefit the family members. They never allowed the schemes to reach the poor and needy. The poor rural children who were studying computer courses would be given laptops. Nearly 9 lakh laptops would be purchased at a cost of Rs. 10,000 each.

Earlier, he also distributed welfare schemes worth Rs. 60 lakh to 650 beneficiaries at a function held at Edapadi town in which he said that a ring road would be formed shortly for Edapadi town and a bridge would be constructed across river Sarabanga. He said that 400 petitions were received and officials concerned would take necessary action on them.

Sanctioned

The Minister said that two students of Holy Angels Matriculation Higher Secondary School at Salem approached him with a request that if they were sponsored intense training at San Francisco in United States, they could bring laurels to the State at international championships. After considering their pleas sympathetically, the Chief Minister immediately sanctioned Rs 3.20 lakh for the girls to attend the training abroad.

Collector K Maharabushanam presided over the functions in which senior officials and others participated.

K. Sokkalingam has assumed charge as the city’s Police Commissioner here on Monday. Prior to that, he held various positions including SP, State Human Rights Commission.

Mr. Sokkalingam, belonging to Theni district, after taking over charge told the media here that he would give priority to law and order. “I will ensure a peaceful life for the citizens in the city,” he said and added that he would take steps to regulate the chaotic traffic.

He said that he would form City Vigilance Committees ward-wise with public participation to monitor the crimes and assist the police on duty in respective wards. The committees would comprise of 30 to 40 members with clean background. They would be trained in public-police relationship and also serve as a bridge between the two. The chain snatchers would be dealt severely and a comprehensive plan would be chalked out to deal with the crime.

Public could inform him of any ‘katta panchayats’ and also asked the public to cooperate with him in his endeavours to make the city a peaceful one.
