Steps will be taken to introduce pre-paid auto fare system in Salem city after consulting the trade unions, said Collector J. Chandrakumar.

Presiding over the road safety meeting here on Thursday, he said that as per the wish of the general public and members of the Safety Council, pre-paid auto system could be introduced for which he said he would hold talks with auto and trade unions regarding the issue.

As such the pre-paid fare system was in vogue in the hill station of Yercaud.

The same could be introduced at bus stands and Railway Junction, he pointed out.

He warned the auto rickshaw drivers not to fleece the public who came to them for service.

The Collector further pointed out that high mast lamps would be erected at Tiruvagoubndanur bye-pass and Salem Thoppur ghat section to prevent accidents.

He said that all steps that were necessary would be taken in order to identify accident-prone areas and provide necessary safeguard mechanism to prevent the same. These would be in place shortly.

The meeting also sought a report from the Salem Corporation on the shifting and relocation of bus shelters and erecting traffic signals.

He however pointed out that accidents had come down this month.

DRO S. Palanisamy, Corporation Commissioner Prabhakaran, DCs Baskaran and Raveendran, ADSP Elangovan and other officials took part in the meeting.

The Consultant of the Office of Chief Electoral Officer, Tamil Nadu, C. R. Brahmam has said that nearly 75 per cent of the districts have been covered so far under the exercise of training the officials in the preparation of electoral rolls for the Tamil Nadu Legislative Council.

“The officers will be ready for the Council polls since they, in a majority of the districts, have already been on the job of preparing the rolls for the Legislative Council,” he said after participating at the training programme for the officers of Salem, Namakkal, Villupuram and Cuddalore districts.

The exercise, he said, would include the components of revision of rolls especially in graduates and teachers’ constituencies, prepared de-novo before each election, with qualifying dates and local body representatives’ constituencies with no special qualifying date since they were constantly updated.

There would be no house-to-house enumeration and eligible persons should submit their applications in Form 18 for graduates and Form 19 for teachers and Form 17 for local representatives to the authorities concerned with documentary proof.

The last date of filing applications would be November 6, 2010. Forms would be distributed in offices between November 1 and November 6, 2010. The prepared rolls would be displayed in the offices concerned.

The workers and employees claimed that despite their repeated requests, the managements of both factories had failed to redress their grievances.

Wage revision

Wage revision, job security and promotions were denied to more than 1,300 workers of two units.

They also convened agitations near the units on Monday.

They pointed out that they along with their family members would stage a dharna in front of Collectorate on August 23.

Stalls

Nearly 50 co-operative handloom societies and others from many districts including Salem, Erode, Namakkal, Kancheevaram, Vellore, Coimbatore, Paramakudi, Cuddalore, Virudhunagar, Karur and Madurai have established their stalls in the exhibition. Mayor J. Rekha Priyadarshini presided over the function.

Registered

Mr. Raja in his address said that 43,100 handloom weavers were registered in Salem district, in which 65 societies of the total 70 were functioning on profits.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister had provided free power of 100 units per month for handloom and 500 units for power looms.

These products included silk dhotis, angavasthrams, silk sarees, shirts, cotton sarees, dhotis, towels, lungis, bed sheets, carpets and mosquito nets.
