Merits of family-run businesses discussed

“Spiritual and Social capitals are the foundation for the success of family-run businesses,” M.V. Subbiah, Chairman, National Skill Development Corporation and former Chairman of Murugappa Group said.

Speaking on the topic “Family Business – Enlarging the Circle of Trust,” at a meeting organised by the Salem Chapter of Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), here recently, Mr. Subbiah said that like everything in life there were two sides for every coin.

“The common perception of a family-controlled business was it is outdated, sluggish, beset by nepotism, family feuds and too little money.” But the other side was that family businesses were more profitable than the peers, more professional, more resilient and more apt to survive than their rivals.

He also highlighted the policies and processes that were needed to tackle different stages of the ownership in such business ventures.

He pointed out that the entrepreneur was the inventor, the developer and the promoter. “The man who initiates and recognises technical improvements and who succeeds in getting them introduced is the dynamic actor of capitalism and breaks away from tradition of creating an empire for his family members and capturing a paragraph in history books,” he said.

He mentioned that CII was the best organisation to help grow industry and was useful to enhance knowledge of creativity and innovation.

C. Valliappa, Chairman, Sona Group of Institutions said that there was no CII branch in Salem till recently even though it was one of the Tier-II cities in Tamil Nadu.

He said that the involvement of members was important to improve the development of the city with the help of CII.

SALEM: Members of Salem Federation of All Fabric Manufacturers’ Associations and Tamil Nadu Small Powerloom Export Cloth Manufacturers Seva Sammelan staged a demonstration here on Saturday on the second day of the two-day weavers’ strike to protest against the steep increase in yarn price.

Those involved in the industry of yarn dyed woven fabrics – Salem’s special industry with a turnover of Rs. 2,000 crore per annum and manufacturers and exporters of value added garments made from yarn dyed fabrics which records Rs. 400 crore turnover, were facing bleak future. Of late the industry had been facing various problems and the lifting of ban on cotton export had aggravated the same, it was pointed out by protestors.

This would lead to starvation of thousands who were engaged in the industry in and around Salem and power and handloom workers in Salem and Namakkal districts.

They insisted that besides banning cotton export, the procurement and distribution of cotton should be made through Cotton Corporation of India.

The Union government apart from modernizing the NTC mills also should take up the same programme to re-open the sick and closed government controlled co-operative spinning mills allocating necessary funds so that the availability of cotton yarn could be made available to all power and handloom units.

They wanted that cotton and cotton yarn should be declared under the Essential Commodities Act.

The dyers in Salem met Agriculture Minister Veerapandi S. Arumugam on Tuesday and sought his co-operation in getting the clearance from concerned departments to supply raw water to the proposed Rs. 300-crore Salem Dyeing Park, coming up near Mecheri near here.

The representatives of the industry told him about the problems in the wake of the closure of 152 dyeing units in Salem for pollution problems following High Court orders. The move had, in fact, prompted them to go for an integrated park with Common Effluent Plant for which they sought the cooperation of the Minister following which he summoned the coordinated meeting of officials from Public Works Department (PWD), Tamil Nadu Water and Drainage Board and Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board.

The officials told the Minister that PWD’s Irrigation Section had to grant permission to draw water from a near-by river based on which TWAD Board could lay the pipeline and supply 2.50 MLD of water per day to the proposed park. The Minister asked the industry’s representatives to apply through proper channels so that he could later co-ordinate with the officials concerned for getting the clearance. He also told them to abide strictly the pollution norms.

Later, he told the media that the dyers had been told to finalise their plans about the Park before going for other benefits. “Now, they have come forward to adhere to pollution norms. We also can extend help,” he pointed out.
