Work on to tar road leading to Kumaragiri Hills.

The tar-topping works on the 2 km-long road leading to Sri Kumaragiri Dhandayuthapani Swamy Temple atop Kumaragiri Hills in Ward 37 in Salem city will be completed by the end of this month.

The works, which began during 2009, are apace and the existing mud road has been widened with storm water drainage facility – to cater to the increasing number of devotees and tourists of the hill temple, which is situated right at the heart of the city.

The project is being carried out under the ‘Namakku Naame’ scheme with devotees and Board members of the Temple’s trust contributing Rs. 28.27 lakh while the government through Salem Corporation has contributed Rs. 56.63 lakh. One of the Board members of the Temple’s trust said that with the help of devotees and members of the Board, a mud road at a cost of Rs. 26 lakh was laid in the hills in 2000. Later they formed the Arulmigu Kumaragiri Dhandayuthapani Swamy Narpani Mandram for providing facilities to devotees who visit the temple.

The road also was maintained by the Small Hill Roads Committee.

As the increase in the number of devotees has recorded a steady growth, the Board has decided to tar-top it for which they approached the government, which sanctioned funds under the ‘Namakku Naame’ scheme. The Salem District administration has also extended assistance.

The works at the total cost of Rs. 84.80 lakh is being taken up in three phases including two layer metal laying, bitumen and retaining wall. “The pucca road on which even cars can travel, will be ready by May end positively,” says an officer who is in charge of the project.

A view of the Stanley reservoir in Mettur. —

The State has launched a massive exercise of improving the safety and operational efficiency of select dams with 80 per cent financial assistance from World Bank.

This ambitious project, named ‘Dam Rehabilitation and Improvement Project’ (DRIP), estimated to cost Rs.745.49 crore, is being executed in four phases and expected to be over in 6 years.

A total of 104 dams, being maintained by both the Water Resources wing of PWD and TNEB are being covered under this project, which has three major components — rehabilitation and improvement; safety and strengthening; and management.

While 66 PWD dams will be brought under the rehabilitation and management exercise for a sum of Rs.469.94 crore, the 38 TNEB-maintained dams will have a share of Rs.260.14 crore from the fund. It is proposed to carry out sedimentation studies in 60 dams including 45 PWD dams and 15 TNEB’s.

Agricultural Engineering Department will improve catchment areas of Krishnagiri Dam and Kundah reservoir in Nilgiris at a cost of Rs.15.41 crore. To monitor the project, a State Project Management Unit (SPMU) has been set up.

In a communiqué, PWD Secretary K. Dhanavel has pointed out that while the first two phases will have a total of 55 dams, the next two phases will cover 49 dams. The works include the treatment of leakage and reduction of seepage, if any, improvement of internal and external drainage and safety measures, installation of seepage measuring equipment, development of spillways, downstream spillways channels, head regulators and draw-off gates and enhancing the communication between dam and control offices.

The works on the Stanley reservoir in Mettur, which has been allotted a sum of about Rs.7 crore, will be taken up shortly.

A senior dam official told The Hindu that works such as the development and improvement of Ellis Saddle, the surplus weir of the dam and its hydraulic shutters would be taken up under the project.

For free flow of traffic:The State Highways Department has taken up improvement works at the traffic junction near Alagapuram Police Station on Saradha Collage Road in Salem on Friday.

The Salem division of State Highways has undertaken the traffic junction improvement works in front of the Alagapuram Police Station on Saradha College Road in the city at a cost of Rs. 50 lakh. The works for which have begun on Friday.

Road Safety Fund

The project, being executed under the Road Safety Fund of the State Highways, includes a culvert across the road at the junction for storm water drainage, centre median to a distance of 1200 metres from Sri Rathnavel Gounder Kalyana Mandap to Abi Hospital and junction improvement for better vehicle movement on the Sri Saradha College Road, which has become the busiest road with malls and educational institutions.

Though a culvert exists near the police station it is not sufficient for storm water drainage and hence an additional one is being constructed.

According to Assistant Divisional Engineer P. Ramanathan, the project would ensure free flow of traffic at the junction, which has become congested at all hours. The storm water would be diverted to Pallapatti where also a culvert would be constructed at Pallapatti-Sooramangalam junction, he further added.

The works are being executed under the monitoring of Superintendent Engineer K. Jayaraman and Divisional Engineer C. Duraisamy.

The works would be completed in May, he said.

Merits of family-run businesses discussed

“Spiritual and Social capitals are the foundation for the success of family-run businesses,” M.V. Subbiah, Chairman, National Skill Development Corporation and former Chairman of Murugappa Group said.

Speaking on the topic “Family Business – Enlarging the Circle of Trust,” at a meeting organised by the Salem Chapter of Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), here recently, Mr. Subbiah said that like everything in life there were two sides for every coin.

“The common perception of a family-controlled business was it is outdated, sluggish, beset by nepotism, family feuds and too little money.” But the other side was that family businesses were more profitable than the peers, more professional, more resilient and more apt to survive than their rivals.

He also highlighted the policies and processes that were needed to tackle different stages of the ownership in such business ventures.

He pointed out that the entrepreneur was the inventor, the developer and the promoter. “The man who initiates and recognises technical improvements and who succeeds in getting them introduced is the dynamic actor of capitalism and breaks away from tradition of creating an empire for his family members and capturing a paragraph in history books,” he said.

He mentioned that CII was the best organisation to help grow industry and was useful to enhance knowledge of creativity and innovation.

C. Valliappa, Chairman, Sona Group of Institutions said that there was no CII branch in Salem till recently even though it was one of the Tier-II cities in Tamil Nadu.

He said that the involvement of members was important to improve the development of the city with the help of CII.

Shevapet Jayarakini Church in Salem

The Salem Historical Society has urged the administration of the Jayarakini Church, Sevvapet in the city, one of the oldest churches in this part of the State, to immediately restore the broken memorial of the missionary and Bishop of Salem, Rev. Dr. Henry A. Prunier (1889-1957), who was laid to rest on its premises.

The Society’s President J. Jayasingh and General Secretary J. Barnabas have expressed anguish over the damage to the tomb stone and memorial tablet of Prunier, who they say have done yeomen service to the people of the Stateand Salem.

They say this could have happened while the church renovation works were underway. The Society has traced them on the premises in three broken pieces. The Society, which has handed over a memorandum to the Bishop Rt. Rev. Singaroyan in this regard, has also pointed out that Salem was a place where missionaries played a vital role in promoting education besides spreading the Gospel since days of the first missionary Rev. Robert De Nobili who visited Salem in 15 {+t} {+h} century followed by French missionary of The Missions Estrangers De Paris, Rev Jean Abbe Dubois during 17 {+t} {+h} century.

With their initiatives, a small room in Chatram here was built for Parish Priests and later a church and bell tower was added in 1860. In 1949, the Bishop resigned due to ill health and was succeeded by Rev. V Selvanather. Bishop Emeritus Prunier died on March 1957 and was buried on the church premises.

A memorial was erected and it has become a place for pilgrimage, which the Society points out, has a cherished history of 388 years.

M.V. Subbaiah, Chairman, National Skill Development Corporation, confer post-graduate degree on students of Sonal College of Technology in Salem on Monday.

“Business ethics is all about finding the right balance between performance and integrity. Success in business is seen as making profits and advancing private interest and having an unlimited ambition for money, position, and power and whereas the moral life by contrast, focuses on duties to others and places others’ interest over self,” said M. V. Subbiah, Chairman, National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC) .

Delivering the convocation address while conferring degrees on post graduates of Sona College of Technology here on Monday, he said many organisations had poor environment because they could concentrate on maximising the profits without thinking about the people and the processes that they adopt. Sooner than later these businesses would run into problems.

When the ethical environment was poor, organisational performance would suffer due to poor group dynamics, suppressing openness and communication.

These of course were hard to measure but easily felt. The easier and measurable drop was on the yield or productivity. Overall the morale got badly affected leaving the organisation vulnerable to setbacks. He added that the word “Ethical Businesses” seemed to be an oxymoron. Nowadays more unethical practices and frauds than ever before were reported.

The Satyam scandal, financial crisis and 2G scam had made it seem that business was fundamentally an unethical enterprise. It revealed that there were major tensions between business and moral life – tensions that are disturbing as they were important.

“On the other hand, businesses that are ethical have a lot to benefit – a more accurate perception of the world around, a stronger business, a sustainable enterprise and above all mental peace for people working in the business. Failure in business occurs because people are not provided with an environment to think, plan, adapt and execute effectively as a team,” he pointed out.

Evidence had suggested that this kind of capability was not talent driven, but was culturally derived and could be advanced or regressed through cultural practices.

This culture not only prevented unhealthy behaviour but inspired superior reasoning and performance, greater levels of innovation and better group dynamics.

“Ethical enterprises become preferred employers and also tend to have more committed and mutually beneficial relationships.

All these are real strategic advantages to any organization. The question is how can an organization become ethical and maintain it over time?

“The level of ethics in the organization is determined by its culture and values – these trickled down from the top.

The bottleneck of the bottle is at the top – so unless the senior management ‘walks the talk’ the ethical culture cannot be created.

Senior managers have to build the culture on the basis of trust and effective solution. As you graduate and walk into one of these organizations you will be confronted with number of choices, challenging your ethical and moral quotient in every possible way.

He said that his generation resisted change and allowed greed and corruption to erode roots.

Two hundred years of colonial rule had a lasting impact on the generation.

British believed that they could not rule India without creating a class of people, Indian in blood and colour, but British in taste, in opinions, in morals, and in intellect. It was this belief, which had led to the creation of various elite services such as ICS followed by IAS, IPS, IAAS and other bureaucracies.”

As a result, the Indian society got degenerated not only into groups but also into a pseudo culture and value system. In spite of the warning no political or business leader took note of it or with the seriousness that one should have taken it.

“Some 60-odd years after Independence as we march ahead into the 21st century, it becomes more important for us to understand our roots, in order to avoid the dilemma while making such a choice.

“So, it is in this context that I feel honoured in having been born in Nagarathar community, similar to that of the founding family of Sona Group of Colleges.

The community till date consists of 1.5 lakh people, who have not only been at the forefront of economic development of this country, but have made significant contribution in the field of education and social welfare. As a community, it has always believed in giving back to the society.

It has also provided the country with 3 universities, several colleges and polytechnics, over 200 schools, hospitals etc.

He said the exploding entrepreneurship, growing consumption and high savings rate continue to break the shackles of our dependency on the west.

The political fragmentation and caste based politics had led to “important” being replaced by “urgent.”

Surplus

While one could boast of surplus and let food grains rot in government warehouses, millions below the poverty line continued to starve. The growing corruption continued to burden the poor.

Chairman, Sona Educational Institutions C.Valliappa, college secretary A.Dhirajlal and principal P. Govindarajan spoke.

A total of 490 post graduates received degrees among whom 12 Gold Medalists and 31 Rank Holders. A sum of Rs. 5 lakh was disbursed.
