Salem Division’s earnings increased to 4.17 percent

Salem Railway Division has posted a moderate overall earning of Rs 430.33 crore for the year 2010-11, an increase of 4.17 per cent over the previous year’s performance of Rs. 413.12 crore.

The major share of the earnings was from passenger traffic, which amounted to Rs. 282.84 crore, standing at 66 per cent followed by freight traffic, which had yielded an income of Rs. 108.47 crore for a 25 per cent share in the income.

While parcel and others had fetched a sum of Rs 21.38 crore constituting five per cent, the remaining four per cent came from sundry earnings.

The division, according to a press release here on Monday, had ferried 339.39 lakh passengers, 9.48 per cent higher than that of the previous year, i.e, 303.24 lakh. Train accidents were also reduced from nine in 2009-10 to just a single one in 2010-11. However, minor accidents in yards had increased from five to 10 and the overall reduction of the number of accidents came down from 16 to10.

The running punctuality in the division had posted a healthy increase from the previous year’s performance of 84.55 per cent to 89.25 per cent.

Three new trains – Coimbatore – Erode passenger, Coimbatore – Tirupati Express, Coimbatore – Madras Duranto Express – had been introduced while the Coimbatore- Mettupalyam passenger train has been made a regular service.

Passenger amenities included the renovation of the station building at Coimbatore, new booking offices at Podanur and Coimbatore North, providing 58 new platform shelters at various stations, installation of electronic chart display systems at Salem, Coimbatore, Erode and Karur, electronic display boards at Salem, Tirupur, Coimbatore, Erode and Karur, touch screen terminals at 13 locations, 28 passenger operated enquiry terminals and coach guidance system on platforms at Salem, Coimbatore, Erode and Karur.

The division bagged 11 efficiency shields for overall efficiency, engineering, signal and telecommunications, electrical, safety, passengers’ amenity and best maintained catering unit for cell kitchen at Erode.
