SALEM: The Youth Red Cross (YRC) of Salem Periyar University conducted a one-day workshop on Improving voluntary blood donation on its premises here on Wednesday for the programme officers of affiliated colleges at Salem, Namakkal, Dharmapuri and Krishnagiri districts.

Sponsored by Tamil Nadu State AIDS Control Society and the Indian Red Cross Society, it was presided over by the University Registrar, S. Gunasekaran, who said that teachers and media should play a vital role to create awareness among students and the general public on voluntary blood donation.

He said that to donate blood, the donor should be healthy and as far as students were concerned, they should have good habits and lifestyle. Honorary Advisor of Youth Red Cross, Tamil Nadu, A. Kadar Basha, in his inaugural address, said, “YRC and NSS volunteers are contributing a lot for the cause of blood donation.”

Tamil Nadu AIDS Control Society voluntary blood donation consultant T. Sampath said that Tamil Nadu stood third in voluntary blood donation next to West Bengal and Maharashtra. YRC Coordinator P. Thirumoorthi welcomed the gathering. Medical officers Dr. M. Raveendran, Dr. C.G. Nataraj and V.R. Pusalkar handled the technical sessions.
