In 1967 DMK founder leader and the then Chief Minister constructed houses with asbestos roofing for those who lived in huts to prevent frequent fire accidents and deaths.

When Chief Minister M Karunanidhi took over, he through the Slum Clearance and Housing Boards constructed flats for the poor and the low income groups who had been living in huts then. Today, he had launched yet another similar project to make Tamil Nadu a hut-free state by converting 21 lakh huts into concrete houses. The Minister also declared open new buildings for the Gengavllai union office.
