ALFA force Enabled Salem police to bring down crime rate

Sustained monitoring and formation of ‘Alfa’ force has helped Salem Rural Police bring down crime rate in the district this year.

Superintendent of Police V. M. Mayilvahanan told the media that 86 per cent of 309 thefts cases had been detected and Rs. 1.16 crore worth stolen articles and valuables had been seized.

This was 171 cases less when compared to last year’s total thefts. Out of 46 murders, barring two, accused in all other cases had been apprehended.

The district also witnessed 423 fatal accidents and 1,788 other traffic accidents in the district this year.

A total of 6,396 drunken driving cases had been registered while another batch of 9,873 cases for no licenses was booked.

“When compared to last year, traffic violation cases have come down by 126,” the SP said.

Stating that concerted awareness programmes on traffic safety had been undertaken in various towns and villages, the SP pointed out that as many as 102 deaths had occurred in road accidents in the district this year.

“We have made helmet-wearing compulsory now,” he further pointed out.

As far as the area of law and order was concerned, 15 persons had been detained under Goondas’ Act of whom six were arrested for prohibition offences.

In the prosecution sphere, 19 murder cases ended in prosecution in which 17 received life sentences.

The Human Trafficking Wing had also rescued seven women from the clutches of anti-socials under the Immoral Traffic Act and seized three houses in which they were kept.

Under the ‘One Constable for One Village’ scheme, crimes in the district had drastically come down.

“It also promotes good relationship between people and police,” he said.

Flow of illicit liquor also was curbed since the sale in TASMAC shops had recorded 100 per cent.
