Students and staff members of Indian Institute of Handloom Technology (IIHT) took out a rally here on Tuesday to promote use of handloom clothes. Retired Senior Manager of Co-optex (Research and development) K. Krishnamoorthi flagged off the rally at the institute premises.
The rally, organised jointly by the institute and Weavers’ Service centre, passed through important thoroughfares in the city including Ponnammapet main road, Chinnakadai Street, Bazaar Street, First Agraharam, Car Street and Second Agraharam. Participants carried placards and raised slogans urging the people to extend support for the handloom industry. The sector provides employment to a large number of people in the country.
The increased support to handloom sector will help improve the quality of life of a large number of poor weavers.
The rally was organised as a part of the Handloom Week Celebrations which began on December 21. Officer in-charge of IIHT Antao Irvin Josico, Deputy Director, Weavers Services Centre Angamuthu and senior officials were present.
Meanwhile, students, faculty members and officials of the institute and weavers service centre had purchased handloom products worth Rs. 37,000 at the Co-optex Thangam Pattu Maligai.
