Salem Railway Division Completes Second Year

Salem Railway Division, the 68th division in Indian Railways, has completed its second year of existence on November 1.

To mark the annual event, the division organised a series of functions in which cultural programmes were staged for an hour here on Monday.

Divisional Railway Manager P. N. Ram inaugurated a touch screen facility at the portico of the Railway Divisional Office for the benefit of those who used to come to the office. He said that the Division’s cumulative loading during the first six months from April to September 2009 was 8.43 lakh tonnes of freight, registering a 6.47 per cent of growth over the corresponding period of previous year. The cumulative earnings stood at Rs. 196.56 crore for an overall growth of 13.30 per cent. The passenger earnings also increased by 3.92 per cent against the corresponding period of previous year. The ticket checking earnings for the same period was Rs 1.10 crore, a clear 11.02 per cent increase. The touch screen facility, according to Chief Signal Inspector Mahadevan, will provide PNR details, train arrivals and departures and other details concerning the trains’ movement. The touch screen, which was already there, will be moved inside the office for official purpose. The Salem Junction already has the facility. Senior officials of the Division took part in the event.
