More Passenger Amenities for Salem Junction and Other Stations in Salem Rly Div

The Southern Railway has allotted a sum of Rs. 4.50 crore to carry out various development works in Salem Railway Junction, Additional General Manager, Southern Railway, V. Carmelus has said.

Talking to reporters here on Saturday, he said that the funds would be utilised to construct new buildings, create more passenger amenities including parking facilities and other development works.

Steps had also been taken to construct two new platforms.

He said that funds had also been allotted in order to improve the platform roofs.

Mr. Carmelus said that the Railways had also taken steps to install an escalator and construct a new subway in Coimbatore Railway Junction for the benefit of passengers.

The front elevation of the junction would also be improved.

He said that the Railways had sanctioned Rs. 40 crore for the manufacture of four oil-fired steam locomotives for the Nilgiri Mountain Railway (NMR).

These locomotives were expected to be brought into use in one-and-a-half years’ time, he added.

Earlier he inaugurated the Railway Scouts and Guides office here.

Salem Divisional Railway Manager P.N. Ram and senior officials were present.
